Good morning readers, and welcome to our live news blog for Thursday, April 24.

Well, wasn’t it a busy day on the hustings out west yesterday? We had the honour of not only getting a visit from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, but from the prime minister himself, too.

And there was plenty for them to talk about – $21 billion in defence spending over the next decade, on the Coalition’s part.

Meanwhile, Anthony Albanese visited the Collie Power Station, which is one of the Coalition’s proposed nuclear power sites that, according to the PM, Dutton refuses to visit.

It marked a shift in focus to a “Voldemort policy” – energy – which has been strangely absent from the headlines for much of the campaign.

We’ll bring you more on that later.

Meanwhile, it’s (almost) official: the Bears are back, baby! The Perth Bears, that is.

The ARL Commission has agreed in principle to a revised proposal from the WA government for an NRL team in Perth, signing off on an increased offer from Premier Roger Cook in a meeting on Wednesday morning.

If all goes to plan, the Perth Bears will play in the NRL from 2027.
