A man has been shot dead by police after officers were called to an incident in Yarra Junction on Wednesday night.

Police said officers were called to an address on Warburton Highway after reports that a man was assaulting a woman about 5.30pm.

“Two police officers attended the address and observed a man assaulting a woman”, police said in the statement issued late Wednesday.

A police officer discharged their firearm after a confrontation, police said.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene, but the man could not be revived. The woman was taken by air ambulance to hospital and is being treated for serious injuries.

Police said the man and woman are believed to be known to each other.

Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, which is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting.

The state coroner, Judge John Cain, was also attending the scene.
