A manhunt is under way for a person who led a high-speed car chase in a stolen Audi hatchback through Sydney’s eastern suburbs and rammed a police vehicle before police fired shots early on Saturday morning.

Police began following a dark-coloured Audi A1 along Old South Head Road in Rose Bay at about 4am on Saturday, a statement said. Police initiated a chase but terminated it because of high speed.

The vehicle was seen stopped a short time later on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road in Bondi. The police statement said an officer approached the hatchback on foot, but the driver drove the car towards them, prompting police to fire a gun.

The stolen hatchback rammed the police vehicle and drove away. No police were injured.

Checks have now revealed the vehicle was stolen from Double Bay last night.

The hatchback was found at Murriverie Road, North Bondi at 6.30am on Saturday and was preserved for forensic examination.

Inquiries are continuing into the identity of the driver.

Police have called for anyone near the Rose Bay and Bondi locations with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to call Eastern Suburbs Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
