Sophia Bush and Chris Carmack know how to keep fans hooked: they each got their start on a beloved early 2000s teen series and currently costar on ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Now, they’re teaming up for The Stranger in My Home, a twisted psychological thriller that is guaranteed to leave viewers on the edge of their seat.
In Us Weekly’s exclusive first look at the official teaser, Bush, 42, plays mom Ali Mitchell to teenage daughter Katie (Amiah Miller). However, Ali’s picture-perfect family comes crashing down after a stranger named Tom (Carmack) shows up on their doorstep revealing that their children had been switched at birth.
“This is awkward, I’m here about Katie,” Tom says. “I think you have my baby. There must have been a mix-up at the hospital.”
The familial mixup isn’t the only drama in the film. In addition to coping with the shocking news about her daughter, Ali learns that Katie has several secrets her mother was unaware of which leads to the teen going missing.
“I feel like every choice I’m making is wrong,” Ali says in a voiceover. “Everything is unraveling.”
Not only does the Stranger in My Home trailer deliver on the suspense, but Carmack teases that viewers can expect a series of twists and turns.
“This film grabs you from the first scene and never lets go. It’s a wild ride that is going to keep the audience guessing about where the truth ends and the lies begin,” he exclusively tells Us. “It’s a thriller, yes, but also a deep dive into the emotional fallout of broken trust within a family. That’s what makes it resonate.”
Carmack notes that the movie also has “some fun with its genre as the characters unravel.”
“The Stranger In My Home explores the terrifying idea that the truth can still destroy lives,” the Grey’s Anatomy star explains. “That’s what makes it such a gripping and emotional ride.”
Bush, for her part, echoes similar sentiments about the film’s ominous premise.
“At its core, The Stranger In My Home is about the unbreakable bond between a mother and her daughter, and the lengths a woman will go to protect her child,” Bush tells Us. “It’s suspenseful, it’s emotional and it taps into our deepest fears about trust and truth.”
This isn’t the first time Carmack and Bush have worked together on a project. They recently costarred on Grey’s Anatomy together, portraying Atticus Lincoln and Cass Beckman, respectively, but the actors never actually got to share the screen — until now.
“Getting to work with Sophia Bush was an absolute highlight,” Carmack gushes to Us, calling the chance to act alongside Bush “incredibly rewarding.”
Carmack adds that he feels “very lucky” to be part of such a talented cast.
“This cast was a dream! Sophia brings truth to every role she takes on, and Amiah is a rising star,” he shares. “Chris Johnson brought a depth to Jeff that blew me away, as well as so many other great performances in this film. There was a real sense of trust and creative energy on set.”
As for what fans can expect from Carmack’s character, he teases that the role was “an interesting character to explore.”
“He believes he’s doing the right thing, even as his choices become increasingly dangerous,” Carmack tells Us. “I was drawn to the challenge of playing someone whose sense of truth doesn’t always align with reality.”
Miller also gushed to Us about working alongside her The Stranger In My Home costars and how she learned a lot from them — especially Bush.
“Working with Sophia Bush was incredible. She’s so present and emotionally open, which made our mother-daughter connection feel really real. I learned so much just by watching her,” Miller exclusively told Us. “This was one of those sets where everyone brought their A-game, but also made it feel safe and collaborative. It was intense material, but we had each other’s backs the whole time.”
The Stranger in My Home drops on digital Tuesday, June 24.
