A teenage boy has been charged after he stole a luxury vehicle with an elderly dog inside it, resulting in a huge car chase on the Gold Coast.
The Mercedes-Benz was allegedly stolen from a shopping centre on Mudgeeraba Road at Worongary about 4pm on Wednesday. His 12-year-old dachshund was inside the car.
Police allege the 48-year-old owner of the vehicle had just exited his car, and standing nearby, when a 17-year-old boy got into the unlocked car and drove off.
The man was not threatened or physically harmed.
He then borrowed a Dodge Ram and was involved in a crash with the stolen Mercedes-Benz on Melaleuca Street about 5.40pm. The dog was still inside the vehicle at this time.
No one was injured in this crash.
The teen allegedly drove off and abandoned the stolen dog at a home in Nerang about 6.50pm, where residents collected the dog and took it to a vet.
Police tracked the stolen vehicle around the Gold Coast before deploying a tyre-deflation device along the Gold Coast Highway at Palm Beach about 8pm.
The teenager allegedly continued driving the damaged car at low-speed along the highway before eventually stopping outside the Palm Beach police station just after 11pm.
The 17-year-old was immediately taken into custody and has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and enter premises.
He was scheduled to appear before the Southport Childrens Court on Thursday.
During the arrest, a police officer can be heard telling the boy “well then don’t do adult crime, mate”, though the boy’s earlier remark had been muted.
The dog has been reunited with its owner and is unharmed.
