Chrissy Metz is opening up about her decision to start using GLP-1 medication.

“I started a partnership with Ro,” Metz, 45, shared on the Monday, August 10, episode of the Today show. “I’m so excited. Listen, I was very skeptical about GLP-1s for years. I was like, ‘I don’t know about all this.’”

The Hunting Wives star shared that she ultimately changed her mind when she spoke with a friend who presented her with a “thesis.”

“I was like, ‘OK, this might be helpful.’ Of course, in the meantime, there were some complications with my father’s health, and I was like, ‘Maybe I should try and get ahead of it,’” she explained. “It was just something that I thought would be good for me. It’s not for everybody. But it’s been really wonderful for me.”

Metz shared that she has already noticed changes in her health, including that she is able to perform on Broadway multiple times per week.

“I can run around the stage eight shows a week on Broadway as a 45 [year-old] perimenopausal woman,” she said. “So, it’s really helped with inflammation, it’s helped with, just sort of, energy, just overall health, which is so nice. Really for me, it’s health now for health later. That’s the most important thing for me, longevity.”

For Metz, beginning a weight loss drug was something that she was “nervous” and “scared” to do.

“I didn’t know how it was going to react to my body,” she explained. “I don’t think we also knew all the right information. I think we were sort of miseducated. I was as well. … Just learning what it really was and how it affects everybody differently and how you don’t know until you try. My doctor and my team were like, ‘Yeah, I think this would be beneficial for you.’”

Metz explained that she has now had a “whole lifestyle change,” including strength training.

“It’s not the easy way out. I think a lot of people think, ‘Oh, it’s a magic wand.’ And no, in fact, you have to be more diligent. It’s good for me, because I’m really putting myself first. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but I have to really put into practice now,” she said, before quipping, “I’m an athlete now, you guys.”

She continued, “It’s all wonderful. It’s all helping. It’s just been a really wonderful journey.”

When asked for her response to anyone who may be “disappointed” to hear she’s deciding to use a weight loss drug, Metz replied, “I think that it’s so important to put yourself first.”

“As we age, sometimes we have health issues that we are concerned about, or want to get ahead of,” she said. “That was certainly my case. I have to do what’s right for me.”
