Multiple crashes backed up traffic around Brisbane after the city was shrouded in fog on Thursday morning, as flights circled the airport awaiting instructions and some incoming arrivals were diverted from the city.
A multi-vehicle crash on the Pacific Motorway at Klumpp Road in Mount Gravatt caused heavy traffic for city-bound commuters.
One car rolled, and two elderly patients were taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
In the city’s north, a crash near the Wyampa Road overpass created significant delays in North Lakes.
Meanwhile, a small truck rollover on the Warrego Highway, west of the city, clogged the commute for drivers heading in from Ipswich, despite the fact the truck was headed west.
Other small crashes around the city were also impacting traffic.
Flights were diverted from the city, but an airport spokesperson said no departures had been affected.
Qantas flights from Los Angeles and Singapore were diverted to the Gold Coast, as were a Virgin flight from Darwin and a Jetstar flight from Perth.
Another Jetstar flight from Manila was sent to Sydney, with flights circling the airport awaiting instructions.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning about the dangerous driving conditions, with the fog stretching to the Sunshine and Gold coasts north and south of Brisbane, and as far west of the Sunshine Coast as Kingaroy.
Meteorologist Jonathan How said visibility was incredibly low through the early morning, but the fog was expected to lift.
“Now the sun’s come up we are seeing some breaks in the fog,” he said.
Temperatures were expected to reach 25 degrees in the city on Thursday afternoon.
