An apparent “fire rainbow” was visible across areas of New Jersey on Tuesday, a rare atmospheric phenomenon that hadn’t blanketed the skies of the Garden State in seven years.
The rarity was witnessed amid the clouds over Edison in the western portion of Middlesex County at around 2:15 p.m., nj.com reported.
The rainbow is typically flat with a horizontal band of colors formed by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds, according to the International Cloud Atlas.
Its colors can intensify into bright reds and oranges that mimic flames in the sky — giving it the fire rainbow moniker fire rainbows.
A partial one was also visible above Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, which locals captured on social media.
They symbolize good fortune, leaving New Yorkers hoping it’s a sign of things to come as the Knicks prepare to head into the NBA Finals — and are just four wins away from their first championship since 1973.
As for Garden Staters, they last saw a fire rainbow in May 2019 around the Jersey Shore.
