Katie Holmes opened up about her viral reunion with Dawson’s Creek costar Joshua Jackson for their upcoming film, Happy Hours.
“To be honest, it was unexpected,” the actress, 47, said of the fans’ excitement for her and Jackson, also 47, to share the screen again in an interview with Variety published on Friday, June 5. “I know we were on a show that a lot of people watched, but I guess we never fully realized the impact. It still kind of throws all of us.”
Before Jackson signed on to the project, Holmes, who serves as the movie’s writer and director, checked in with her former costar — and ex-boyfriend — if there was a chance he would be down for the role.
“We hadn’t worked together in 25 years, and we’ve changed a lot,” Holmes explained. “We also wanted to give ourselves the space to show different sides of ourselves and to not portray these people we’re known for.”
Jackson ultimately said yes. Holmes shared that working with Jackson again after all these years was just like riding a bike.
“It’s like a shorthand that we quickly realize still exists,” she said. “We’ve always done well working off one another. He directs me and I direct him without us even mentioning it.”
Last summer, Holmes and Jackson drove the internet wild after photos of them filming in New York City went viral. While there was a high amount of interest in the filming process, Holmes confessed that they attempted to keep some things under wraps.
“We didn’t want anyone to record us. Sometimes it worked; obviously sometimes it didn’t,” she recalled. “It was nothing we couldn’t handle.”
Nearly three decades ago, Jackson and Holmes were cast on Dawson’s Creek, in which they played Pacey and Joey, respectively. After the show’s premiere in 1998, the pair started dating but called it quits the following year. Despite their break up, Jackson and Holmes continued to work together on the teen drama and their characters ended up being love interests. The pair remained friends even after the show wrapped up in 2003.
Earlier this year, Jackson reflected on what it was like to reunite with Holmes for Happy Hours.
“We spent so much intense time at a particular moment in our lives and then we have maintained our friendship for all of these years, but we’ve never had a chance to be on camera together, and it was magic,” he said about working with Holmes in a March interview with Today.
Happy Hours, which will be a trilogy, is about a couple deciding if their fizzled love deserves another chance.
“Katie wrote this beautiful story for the two of us that is the three phases of a love story,” Jackson said of the movie’s premise. “So we shot the fun part, which is the falling in love, and she’s cutting it together now. And that will come out and hopefully it will give us the opportunity to go back and make the other two.”
