The Trial of Alec Baldwin documentary will examine Alec Baldwin’s legal battle following the fatal shooting on the set of his movie Rust.
“They’ll definitely put me in jail if they could,” Baldwin, 68, says in the trailer released Thursday, September 10. “How the hell did I end up in this vortex? The public life is painful. Once they write your rap sheet, it’s hard to get out from under it.”
Baldwin stood trial on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in New Mexico in 2024, nearly three years after Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died in 2021 during an accidental shooting mid-production. (While Baldwin was holding the firearm at the time, he denied “[pulling] the trigger” or knowing there was a bullet inside the chamber.)
“When they told me she died, I was in shock,” Alec says in the documentary trailer. “I was in disbelief.”
A judge ruled in July 2024 to dismiss the manslaughter charges against Alec with prejudice, citing that prosecutors hid evidence that could have been linked to the incident.
The actor and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, relived the trial for Rory Kennedy’s new documentary.
“I want to be acquitted so I can walk out the door and everybody just leave me alone,” Alec says. “I never dreamed in my life that this would come down to this.”
In a separate segment, Alec adds, “If you said to me, hike up Mount Everest and she’ll come back. I’d be packed and ready to go. Whatever I could do, but there’s nothing you can do.”
As Alec maintained his innocence, Hilaria, 42, stood steadfast by her husband’s side. (Alec and Hilaria are the parents of seven kids. The 30 Rock alum also shares daughter Ireland, 30, with ex-wife Kim Basinger.)
“Happy 12 years of marriage, Alec … not only have there been joyful ups and sad downs that life inevitably brings, but we have also experienced everything from sideways, zigzags, tremendous love and also things that are so painfully and plainly backwards,” Hilaria wrote via Instagram in June 2024, just weeks before the trial was dismissed. “We hang on tight … hold on to family and friends to source our comfort and energy. Lean in to gratitude to brighten every day.”
She continued at the time, “How lucky am I to have you and our children, Alec. I know I am not here on this page much, as of late, but I will be again … I want you, who is reading this, to know I am grateful to all of you who make this page a supportive community. I hope you feel how much your kindness is a gift that we will forever treasure.”
The Trial of Alec Baldwin hits theaters in New York City Thursday, October 1, with Los Angeles screenings set for later that month.
