Police are hunting a gunman and their two suspected accomplices after Geraldton man Ashley Wayne Cameron was shot in the leg in the early hours of Wednesday.
Cameron was taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital about 1am on Wednesday, after he was allegedly shot in the leg by a person known to him. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Officers have not released any detail about how they came to be aware of the incident in Moonyoonooka, which is about 12 kilometres outside the Geraldton town centre and home to the local airport, a riding school and a number of rural properties.
However, they did issue a public safety warning in the early hours of Wednesday as a precaution.
“While this incident involves a firearm, there is no information to suggest an ongoing threat to the wider community. Members of the public are not being asked to be alarmed, however they should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police,” a WA Police spokesperson said.
Cameron is a Geraldton man and has had previous public interactions with police. He often travels between the state’s Pilbara, Goldfields and Mid West regions. He is a father and an artist.
On Wednesday, WA Attorney-General Tony Buti, who did not speak about Cameron’s identity, said it seemed he had been shot by “pellets” to his leg, rather than a bullet.
“All I know is that there was one person that was injured. Pellets, I think were shot,” he said.
“I think there are three offenders, and the police will provide a [later] update, I’m sure.”
Significant police resources have been deployed to the area, including the tactical response group.
Police advised extra resources had also been sent to nearby Utakarra. However, all roads remain open as normal, and the area is not considered to be in lockdown.
“Members of the public are asked to stay away from the area while police continue to respond to the incident,” a WA Police spokesperson said.
