A man accused of attacking another man almost 40 years his senior in a West End park has been charged by police, after the older man died in hospital.

Investigations indicated the older man fell after he was allegedly hit on Sunday, suffering a head injury in the fall.

Officers suspected the 66-year-old had been assaulted up to an hour before emergency services were called to West End Common on Brisbane’s Vulture Street about 1.30am.

He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Police established a crime scene at the popular inner-city park on Sunday morning.

On Monday, officers charged a 27-year-old Yeronga man with one count of unlawful striking causing death and two counts of drug possession.

The two men were known to each other, police said.

The 27-year-old was expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
