New privacy laws will seek to crack down on smart glasses and AI, in the government’s latest attempt to keep pace with digital technologies.
Attorney-General Michelle Rowland will release the draft legislation today and is expected to address the media to unveil the reforms.
One of the key changes will grant Australians the right to seek erasure or removal of their personal information from social media.
“When it comes to smart glasses, we think that there are real privacy risks with people having photos of themselves, images of themselves taken via these glasses without their consent, and when they don’t even know it’s happening,” Environment Minister Murray Watt told Nine’s Today show this morning.
“So we’ve got to make sure that we keep changing the law to keep pace with technological change. We’ve obviously brought in those world-leading weapons for social media, other reminders as well, and this is the next stage of doing that.”
