Arrest rips apart media narrative on death of Black woman found hanging from Mississippi tree

Mississippi authorities have arrested a 51-year-old local man on a murder charge following an official homicide ruling in the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four who was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home last month.

The arrest follows weeks of intense media attention and widespread online discussion regarding the circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death in a state with a historic legacy of racialized violence. But law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect taken into custody is Jarques Ratliff, a Black Jackson resident who had a prior personal connection with Fortune.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced during a Saturday news conference that Ratliff was taken into custody without incident while walking along Capitol Street in Jackson, shortly after officers executed search warrants at related properties. Chief Brackney emphasized that while the arrest marks a significant breakthrough, the investigation remains active and additional arrest warrants are expected to be served as detectives follow further leads.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., last week warned of “racial terror” and “widespread modern-day lynchings” in the U.S. as she joined dozens of Democrats demanding that the Department of Justice investigate hanging deaths of Black Americans.

Fortune’s body was discovered Aug. 3 in the backyard of a vacant property in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in Jackson. Although investigators logged hundreds of hours interviewing nearly 15 individuals and reviewing physical evidence over the past month, formal arrest warrants could not be executed until the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide late Thursday. Once that classification was handed down, members of the Jackson Police Department’s robbery-homicide unit moved swiftly to secure and execute two search warrants alongside the arrest warrant for Ratliff.

Addressing public interest in the case, Chief Brackney acknowledged the heightened scrutiny but stressed that law enforcement remains strictly guided by verifiable physical evidence rather than external speculation. She noted that authorities understood public concern given Mississippi’s history, but stated the department is bound to ensure all public statements are backed by forensic facts.

“We understand that this case has received media attention from across the globe and across the community. We understand the questions and the desire for answers given Mississippi’s history,” Brackney said. “We understand this case is being viewed through a broader lens – a global lens – and we do not dismiss those concerns. We are taking them seriously. At the same time, we do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and the facts.”

Brackney also directly clarified that law enforcement had never officially designated any persons of interest prior to Ratliff’s arrest, refuting social media reports that a 65-year-old man had previously been identified as a suspect.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said police promptly notified her family of the homicide ruling and Ratliff’s arrest on Friday. Spivey expressed gratitude for the police work and reiterated her firm belief that her daughter did not die by suicide, adding that Fortune would never take her own life.

According to family members and an online obituary published in Kentucky, Fortune grew up in Kentucky, skipped her junior year of high school, and was a star cross-country runner guided by strong religious faith before relocating to Jackson a decade ago. Spivey noted that her daughter had experienced homelessness in recent years but was actively working to launch a cleaning business and stabilize her life prior to her death.

Ratliff is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center on a charge of murder. According to Mississippi State Defender André de Gruy, Ratliff is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Jackson Municipal Court no later than Monday morning, where formal charges will be read and bond conditions set. Police have not publicly detailed the specific physical evidence linking Ratliff to the scene, nor have they expanded on the exact nature of his personal association with Fortune as investigators prepare for further potential arrests.
