A bus driver who fatally struck a teenage girl during peak-hour traffic has lost his appeal against a conviction for careless driving.

Lindsay Francis Selby, 72, received a suspended sentence in October 2025 after being found guilty of careless driving over the crash that claimed Tia Angel Cameron’s life.

Cameron, 18, was hit by Selby’s city council bus and pinned against a building just after 5pm on March 8, 2024, in Brisbane’s CBD.

The judgment in Selby’s appeal was handed down on Tuesday by Brisbane District Court Judge Bernard Porter.

Porter said he had dismissed the appeal and would publish his reasons during a brief court session.

He ordered Selby to pay Queensland Police $1800 in costs.

Lindsay Francis Selby, who was driving the Brisbane bus that fatally struck Tia Cameron, leaves Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Selby was not present in court to hear the decision.

He was found guilty in 2025 of driving without due care or attention causing death following a hearing in Brisbane Magistrates Court.

There was no jury and Magistrate Aaron Simpson determined the verdict following a one-day trial in September.

Selby was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, to be wholly suspended on the condition he not reoffend in the next 12 months.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months instead of the mandatory minimum period of six months.

Queensland’s maximum sentence for careless driving causing death is 12 months’ imprisonment or a $13,800 fine.

In his verdict, Simpson said he rejected Selby’s varying accounts of trying to brake but being unable to press the pedal as he rounded a downhill corner near Brisbane’s Central train station.

Simpson told Selby he had caused a “tragic accident” by failing to pay attention and observe traffic ahead of him as he turned the corner.

“That poor decision caused you to collide with the building and Tia Angel Cameron,” Simpson said.

Barrister Saul Holt told a Brisbane District Court appeal hearing in July that Selby’s actions in the seconds between starting the turn and trying to avoid an SUV in front of him did not amount to a criminal offence.

Crown prosecutor Susan Hedge argued Simpson’s finding that Selby was unreliable in his claim of trying to avoid the crash was enough to secure a conviction for a professional driver working a shift with expected heavy traffic.

Cameron’s father Alastair was in court on Tuesday but declined to comment after the decision.
