“Trump’s patriotic re-naming of parts of the world is intriguing,” thinks George Manojlovic of Mangerton. “I’m waiting for something more imaginative than Gulf of America or Lake America. American Mayan Yucatán rolls off the tongue, as does Unclesamoa and Unclesamistan. How about Yankee Chewing Guam or Southern Fried Türkiye? Londonald has a familiar ring to it, too.”
The Bee Gees’ Easter Show gig (C8), has notoriety, according to Andrew Cohen of Glebe: “I remember when a handsome young man about 17, brought my 15-year-old sister home to Pymble about 6pm from the Easter Show with his two young brothers in the back of his yellow FC Holden. He politely apologised to my scary fuming father, ‘My brothers and I had commitments’. Dad: ‘I know who you are Mr Gibb. You’re one of those singers on Bandstand. How dare you bring my daughter home after dark. Get back in your car. Don’t go near her again.’ Maurice and Robin saw me watching from a window and their eyes were messaging me their alarm. My sister remains none too pleased about this.”
Marjie Williamson’s pill-popping enquiry (C8) has flooded our mailbox to the extent that it’s challenging to find material on any other subject. It led Nola Scott of Wagga Wagga to say, “I’m right-handed, so I open tablets in a foil pack from the left, just as I write from the left. I don’t think I could do it going backwards.” Michael Johnston of Corlette starts “each of my four foil sheets of tablets in a random spot and congratulate myself when they all finish on the same day. Being right-handed I open them with my left hand as an anti-dementia strategy.”
All very instructive, but maybe it’s worth heeding Col Burns of Lugarno: “I may be ambidextrous or just disorganised, but if I noticed that I was selecting tablets other than at random, I’d assume that those tablets were treatment for my OCD.”
“Lyndall Dawson succinctly and incisively describes the genius of Cathy Wilcox (C8),” says Robyn Cashman of Fernhill. “The suggestion of a book of her work is welcome. It would make a great addition to every school’s modern history reading list. So much food for thought.”
“A crime reporter recently referred to an investigating police squad as ‘infamous’,” notes Lea Grant of Lyneham (ACT). “Does he know something we don’t or does he need a dictionary?”
