Lunar New Year 2026 Eclipse: Here’s how to set intentions for this ‘profound spiritual portal’

The Year of the Fire Horse is upon us, and this year, the Lunar New Year, celebrated on February 17, 2026, coincides with a humdinger new moon solar eclipse in Aquarius.

“This rare convergence transforms the traditional celebration from a cultural milestone into a profound spiritual portal, inviting us to set intentions in rhythm with lunar phases and radical cosmic shifts,”  Hong Kong-based certified counselor and award-winning astrologist Letao Wang told The Post.

Wang explained that a solar eclipse is essentially a supercharged new moon, intensifying the power and probability of both endings and beginnings.

“In Aquarius, the sign of innovation, community, and future vision, this eclipse amplifies the Lunar New Year’s theme of renewal. It asks us not merely to repeat old customs, but to reimagine them,” said Wang.

He notes that there is a ‘let freedom ring’ imperative to this New Year eclipse.

“The Fire Horse symbolizes dynamic energy and unbridled freedom, while Aquarius rules breakthroughs,” said Wang.

“Focus on areas where you seek liberation from old patterns. Where can you introduce a new, more authentic way of living or working? This is a time to question outdated structures — both personal and societal — and dare to think differently.”

Because Aquarius represents the power of the collective over the ego of the individual, an ethos of “we” over “me,” we can and should focus our attention and intentions on collaborations, community projects, and the meaningful expansion of our inner circle.

“Intentions set around contributing your unique skills to a larger group will be especially potent,” he said.

Wang imparts that eclipses are synonymous with fated change, and he encourages a mindset of radical acceptance and hopeful integration.

“Rather than resisting, focus on cultivating adaptability and an open mind. What future is trying to emerge through you? Set intentions aligned with progress, technological mindfulness, and humanitarian ideals,” said Wang.

Wang shared that the Lunar New Year on February 17th marks a brand-new lunar cycle, and by consciously working with the energy of each of the following moon phases, we can carry our intentions to fruition.

New Moon (Feb 17th) – The Eclipse Seed: Setting Radical Intentions

According to Wang, the eclipse is a potent moment for sowing the seeds of change.

“After your traditional celebrations, take a quiet moment. Write down intentions that are not about ‘more,’ but about new.’ How can you innovate your life? What old mindset can you release to make space for a more authentic, community-oriented you? Be bold andvisionary.”

First Quarter Moon (Approx. Feb 24th) – Taking Action

Wang notes that one week after the eclipse, the waxing moon brings us a welcome surge of energy.

“This is the time to take the first concrete step toward your New Year’s intention. If your goal is community connection, join a new group or reach out to a collaborator.”

He urges all to embrace the Horse’s energetic momentum, and if challenges or obstacles arise, meet them with the pioneering, wheels-up, sky’s-the-limit spirit of Aquarius.

Full Moon (March 4th) – Illumination & Release

As ever, the full moon illuminates where we are and amplifies how we feel.

“Review your progress. What has your initial action revealed? The Full Moon’s light often shows what must be released for further growth,” said Wang.

He notes that part of ensuring future growth is celebrating whatever progress you have made.

“If you encounter friction—perhaps an old habit resisting your new Aquarian ideal—use this phase’s power to consciously let it go. This harmonizes with the tradition of clearing debt and strife before the New Year.”

Last Quarter Moon (Approx. March 12th) – Reflection & Adjustment

As the moon wanes, Wang shares that it is likewise time to turn our attention inward.

“Reflect on the cycle. What worked? What needs adjustment? This is a time for graceful correction, not force. Release any attachment to rigid outcomes. The Aquarian lesson is to stay fluid and responsive to new information. Prepare for closure.”

Returning to the Balsamic Moon (Pre-New Moon) – Surrender & Rest

Wang encourages a hard rest and reset before the next lunar cycle begins on March 19th.

Trust that the seeds planted during the powerful Lunar New Year eclipse are integrating. Engage in quiet meditation, cleanse your space (a practice mirrored in the pre-New Year housecleaning), and express gratitude. This creates sacred space for the next cycle to begin.”
