A woman and a man in their 20s have been rushed to hospital with knife injuries after an early morning machete attack in Melbourne’s CBD.
Emergency services were called to Queen Street at about 2.30am on Monday after reports of a man armed with a machete. Police said the man allegedly attacked another man before he was arrested, but Ambulance Victoria confirmed a woman was also injured in the incident.
“Advanced life support paramedics responded to the scene,” a spokesperson said. “A female in her 20s was treated for upper body injuries and transported to The Alfred in a serious condition.”
They also confirmed a man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with mid-body injuries. He is in a stable condition.
Detectives were seen putting evidence into brown paper bags, and the area was surrounded with police tape.
Early on Monday morning, blood splatters were still seen on the stairs of a nearby building, before they were pressure cleaned.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being investigated, but are urging anyone who may have any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
It comes just days after a fatal machete attack that claimed the life of 22-year-old Aidan Becker at the Mernda train station.
Four teenagers have been arrested after Becker was allegedly attacked for intervening between them and a 14-year-old child who was being attacked before 6pm on Friday.
The state government on Sunday announced it would deploy its new violence reduction unit to Mernda to work with police and Department of Education staff to try to address the root causes of youth offending.
