The trial for a Maryland woman charged with murder in the 2014 disappearance of her two young children has been delayed until next year.
Catherine Hoggle’s trial is now scheduled to begin on October 4, 2027, after it was initially set to start next month, a judge ruled on Wednesday, September 23, per NBC4 Washington.
According to her defense team, Hoggle, 39, — who is accused of killing her daughter, Sarah Hoggle, 3, and son, Jacob Hoggle, 2 — reportedly intends to plead “not criminally responsible” to two counts of murder.
Her defense said Hoggle will pursue the plea “because of a mental disorder” and that she was unable to “appreciate the criminality of the alleged conduct” or “conform to the law,” according to the TV station.
Hoggle was the last person seen with Sarah and Jacob in September 2014, according to the Montgomery County Police Department. They were reported missing that month, and have never been found to date.
In August 2025, she was indicted on two counts of murder in relation to their disappearance, police said in a news release last year.
The indictment came following her release from custody in July 2025 after having been first charged with child neglect, obstruction as well as murder. She was previously found unfit to stand trial due to mental health issues and was ordered to be committed to a psychiatric facility, according to police.
The case stems from when Hoggle’s ex-boyfriend, Troy Turner, reported Hoggle, and their children, Jacob and Sarah, went missing on September 8, 2014, according to court documents viewed by the Baltimore Banner. At the time, Turner and Hoggle, who also share a third child, lived together at a home in Clarksburg.
That morning, Turner said Hoggle told him she was taking Sarah and Jacob to an unspecified daycare center and left their home, police have said. A few hours later, Turner took Hoggle to a medical appointment that she’d attend everyday. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
When Turner picked her up, he told her he wanted to get their children from daycare, but Hoggle “was not forthcoming” about their whereabouts, police said in 2014.
Hoggle allegedly said she didn’t know which daycare she brought the children too, and ultimately became separated from Turner, according to court documents, per the Baltimore Banner.
She reportedly slept at a Department of Energy building that night and was later arrested by police on September 13, 2014. She was accused of trying to flee from officers.
In August, public defenders representing Hoggle requested for her to pursue a not criminally responsible plea, considered an insanity plea in Maryland, CBS News reported.
Hoggle has never revealed the potential whereabouts of her children or how they allegedly vanished.
