Mom Sentenced to Prison for Leaving Son, 3, to Die in Hot Car While She Was Drinking

An Iowa mother learned her fate after she admitted to leaving her 3-year-old son alone in a hot car following a day of drinking, which led to his death.

Tiffani Huff Holmes was sentenced on Friday, August 28, to serve two years in prison, according to a Polk County Attorney’s Office news release.

Huff Holmes, 42, pleaded guilty in July to involuntary manslaughter for the death of her son, Myles. She was previously charged with child endangerment resulting in death.

She had been drinking on the day of the fatal incident on June 28, 2025. After she called 911 to report her son’s death, Huff Holmes initially lied to investigators and told them that she had found her son in the garage after she woke up from a nap. However, it was later discovered that she had left him in the hot car after she returned home with her three kids.

Once they arrived home, Huff Holmes continued to drink and eventually fell asleep. She then woke up and found that Myles had been left in the hot car.

Huff Holmes seemingly had been struggling with alcohol abuse for a while before the incident, and she said she promised Myles and others to change her habits. She has lived in a sober living home for the past year, completed inpatient and outpatient therapy and has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

“I feel remorse, regret and pure hatred toward myself,” she told the judge during her sentencing.

Prosecutors also noted during the hearing that Huff Holmes previously attended treatment at least three times before her son’s death.

“Alcoholism is a terrible disease,” Assistant County Attorney Nan Horvat said during Huff Holmes’ sentencing, per the news release. “On that summer day, you chose alcohol over Myles.”

Myles’ father, Marcus Holmes, told the judge that he wanted Huff Holmes to have a relationship with their other child, but she would need to remain sober in order to do so. He also said he had a hard time determining what an appropriate sentence would be for her and asked that she be held accountable for their son’s death.

“I begged her to stop drinking numerous times,” he said during the hearing. “Instead of stopping, she became better at hiding it.”
