New information about linked cold-case murders south of Brisbane has emerged, with police releasing images of men witnesses reported seeing more than two decades ago.
Iain Hogg was murdered at Tweed Heads in 2002, and his red Toyota Celica was used days later in the murder of Frederick Rosson – also known as Slim Johnson – at Mount Nathan in 2002.
Police do not believe the victims were involved in crime or knew each other.
Police said on Wednesday they received new information about the identities of two unknown men with a similar description to images created using Comfit technology from witness accounts in 2002.
They said they were releasing the images with the hopes more people would come forward.
“We are asking the community to take a moment to look at these images,” Detective Sergeant Scott Chapman from the homicide investigation unit said.
“Someone may recognise or know these men or remember something that seemed insignificant at the time but now could be important.
“Twenty-four years have passed and relationships and loyalties change. People who may once have been afraid to speak may no longer feel that way. It is never too late to come forward.”
Hogg, 45 when he died, was reported missing on March 12, 2002, by his elderly mother after failing to turn up to work as a manager of a liquor store at Burleigh.
His red 1992 Toyota Celica coupe with Queensland registration 861 GBW was also reported missing.
Witnesses told police the car was seen in a car park near the Volunteer Marine Rescue Boat pontoon on the northern bank of Tweed River on Coral Street at Tweed Heads between 1am and 3am on March 11.
They said they saw people around the car and a flash followed by a loud bang, with police believing he might have been shot and dumped in the nearby river.
About four days later, 67-year-old Rosson was shot and murdered in his Pademelon Pass residence at Mount Nathan and his 9mm CZ handgun and ammunition was stolen.
He had been in the process of selling the firearm, which had been advertised in The Trading Post, and was contacted by a man from the Coolangatta or Tweed Heads area by phone about its purchase.
Witnesses later told police they saw two men driving a red Celica visit the house at the time of the murder.
On March 20 the car was found abandoned on 15th Avenue on Palm Beach, with forensic tests linking it to both crime scenes.
A $1 million reward remains in place for information that leads to a conviction in the murders.
