NYC blows over 7M on tips for coffee annually — as individuals shell out eye-popping amounts each: study

Big Apple coffee fiends are spending loads of bread on brew — but the actual cost of a cuppa is just the tip of the iceberg.

NYC go-getters fueled by beans, cream and sugar are being “guilt-tripped” into tipping an average of $357 to baristas each year, warns a new report on the ever-controversial rise of tipping culture.

More startling, java junkies across the entire Empire State annually spend over $237 million, combined, in gratuities to coffee shop employees, per the findings.

That’s a lot of dough to blow on a cup of Joe.

“The pressure to tip is growing day by day, and the service staff provides to earn tips is minimal in some instances, such as a coffee from the coffee shop,” wrote study authors for GigaCalculator, a virtual mathematical resource.

“The average American drinks three takeout coffees a week, and the average price of a coffee in New York City is $6.20,” continued the experts, citing trending Numbeo data. “Consumers are now expected to tip 20% on every coffee, leading to New Yorkers spending an extra $357 on what was once a voluntary occasional gift to workers.”

The investigators also garnered statistics from the 2026 Drive Research analysis, which revealed that 71% of Americans drink coffee every single day, with 33% purchasing the hot stuff from haute haunts or chain cafés on a weekly basis.

Spilling the beans on New York’s tipping habits, the Giga insiders determined that over an estimated 533,000 locals buy takeout coffee every day, costing them a collective $237 million in tips.

The demand to hand over a few extra bucks to food industry workers is becoming a buzzy bone of contention among consumers from coast-to-coast.

A staggering 78% of customers say tipping practices “have become ridiculous,” while roughly 74% claim restaurants arbitrarily inflate the suggested gratuity amounts displayed on digital payment screens, a recent survey revealed.

Whistleblowers have even accused Shake Shack of hitting patrons with a sneaky “no tip” surcharge, arguing that the hamburger hut tacks on an additional fee to folks who refuse to tip before checking out. The fast-food joint has since denied the allegations.

Dennis Relojo-Howell, the managing director for Psychreg, an online psychology hub, told Giga that the increasing hassle of participating in tipping culture is powered by obligation rather than appreciation for good service.

“People often tip not because they feel moved to, but because they worry about how refusing or reducing the amount will be perceived by the person serving them,” Relojo-Howell said in the study. “This is closely tied to what psychologists call social norm ambiguity. There is also a guilt dimension worth noting.”

“The visible act of selecting ‘no tip’ on a screen, often in front of the staff member, creates an uncomfortable moment of public refusal that many people would rather avoid altogether by simply tipping something, even a small amount,” he added, “making many customers feel manipulated by the process rather than generous.”
