Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, Spain’s famous “wolf boy”, has, as has now emerged, died on Saturday 15 August at the age of 80.

Born in 1946 in a country that was just recovering from a civil war and a world war, Rodríguez initially grew up in the Andalusian village of Añora.

Rodríguez’s life was marked by poverty, hunger and mistreatment. His father could barely feed the family, while his stepmother treated him brutally. When he was six, his father sold him to a goatherd, who left him in a remote valley where he was to herd livestock together with an old shepherd.
