State Farm to pay a B dividend back to auto policyholders — here’s how to see if you qualify

Like a good neighbor…State Farm pays its dividends.

If you had State Farm car insurance last year, you might have a payday on the horizon.

For qualifying customers, the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing a one-time $5 billion dividend.

The cash will be distributed across more than 49 million insured vehicles.

State Farm underscores that this big-time payday is not a settlement, rebate, or promo, but rather a policyholder dividend.

What is a policyholder dividend, you ask?

Because State Farm is a mutual insurance company, its policyholders are considered members. Under this structure, and when financial conditions are supportive, the company may return money directly to eligible policyholders via a policyholder dividend.

According to State Farm, this latest, unprecedented payday was made possible by the company’s 2025 financial standing, bolstered specifically by its underwriting performance and declining auto repair costs and collision frequency, which helped State Farm reduce insurance rates in 40 states by an average of 10 percent.

“As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future. That translated this year to lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend, ” Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual President and CEO, said in a statement.

To be eligible for the dividends, customers must have had a State Farm Mutual private passenger auto policy at any time between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, a dividend payment of at least $10, and a policy that was not provided through a state-assigned risk program.

Those who had a qualifying policy last year but have changed insurance companies are still eligible for the dividend payment.

According to State Farm, the dividend is exclusive to auto policyholders, as dividends for homeowners, renters, life, and other types of insurance are evaluated separately.

State Farm shared that payment amounts will vary by state, based on that state’s underwriting contribution, and by number of policies held; each dividend is calculated as 4 to 10 percent of the premium paid on a qualifying policy in 2025.

Payments will average roughly $100 per vehicle, and those with multiple policies will receive separate cash payments for each.

Dividends have been issued as of July 31, 2026, and millions of State Farm customers have already received their payments. However, the company notes that because of the number of eligible vehicles, distribution is happening in waves and could take several months to complete nationwide.

Customers who have an email address linked to their policy will receive an email with instructions to access a payment portal where they can choose digital payment or a mailed check.

Those without an email address will automatically receive a check in the mail.

State Farm advises eligible customers, past and present, to be on the lookout for a notification letter or email and not to dismiss an unexpected payday offer as illegitimate.

However, they advise anyone who is suspicious of the communication they receive or leery of clicking unfamiliar links to use State Farm’s official dividend resources.

Earlier this year, State Farm found itself in crisis mode in California as officials look to slap it with massive fines and suspend its license over the handling of the deadly 2025 Palisades Fire.
