As parents, we all know that flying with kids, toddlers, and babies is not fun.
The anxiety and stress parents feel while boarding is immense, regardless of the age of their children.
Charlotte Heinrich Freeman recently learned that the hard way while traveling with her two children: her toddler daughter, Mimi, and her son, Freddie, who had just turned one.
She posted a video to her Instagram after a flight home to Singapore left her thoroughly shaken.
“I wanted to let you know about an incident we had on the plane where Freddie was a little bit unsettled and crying a bit, and this lady took it upon herself to scream across the cabin at the top of her lungs, ‘Shut up,’” Freeman recounted.
“Now that same lady stood up and stared me down, and I said, ‘Is everything ok?’ and she said, ‘No, your baby has been crying.’”
But that wasn’t all. The disgruntled passenger then added, “And I’m in business class.”
Freeman continued, “I said to this lady, ‘Well, you obviously haven’t had kids; otherwise you would understand what it’s like to have a child, and unfortunately this comes with having a baby.’”
The passenger countered that she actually had five children, insisting that because she had paid for her business class tickets, a mother and her children should never be in business class.
Where should they be, then?
Economy only, according to this passenger.
A conflict in the dark
The confrontation was made all the more jarring by how suddenly it unfolded in the quiet cabin.
“No one stepped in,” Freeman revealed when asked if airline staff intervened.
“It was the middle of the night and the cabin was silent. She initially yelled ‘shut up’ from her chair before getting up and confronting me. It happened very quickly, and the flight crew weren’t nearby at the time.”
What made the reaction so unexpected was that the trip had begun without a hint of hostility.
“There was no sense of tension when we boarded,” Freeman said. “The Italian man sitting in front of us was actually really lovely and showed me pictures of his grandchildren.”
Ironically, this wasn’t even the flight where the kids were at their most restless.
“This was actually our flight home,” Freeman explained.
“The children were more unsettled on the flight over, and Freddie cried for much of it, but we still had a great experience because everyone was considerate and understanding. It shows how differently people can respond to the same situation.”
Standing her ground
The diamond dealer took major issue with the passenger’s elitist logic.
“Number one, even though I’m a paying customer like she is, I don’t deserve to be in business class because I’m a mother with a baby,” Freeman pointed out.
She rightly questioned how a mother of five could show zero empathy to a parent in the same position, especially when Freeman was actively trying to soothe her newly one-year-old son while managing two young kids on a long flight.
As many parents can attest, sometimes babies and toddlers just don’t want to be on a plane.
The biggest issue for Freeman was the sheer hostility of the delivery, being screamed at across a cabin while already feeling “hypersensitive, anxious, and upset.”
When she took to social media asking if mothers and children should really be banished to economy, the floodgates opened.
While most jumped to her defense, the internet did what it does best: sparked a fierce debate.
The internet weighs in
Support poured in from parents and travelers alike, many pointing out that adults often display far worse flight etiquette than a crying infant.
“Men who fart non-stop during a flight shouldn’t be in business class. You can’t control a poor bub, but you can control your farts,” one person wrote.
Freeman’s sister, Andrea, added a touch of humor: “Here are my thoughts. I’m always subjected to traveling economy, and I don’t think that’s fair with or without a child. That class is inhumane.”
Entrepreneur Michelle Battersby was equally defensive: “Ew! Imagine being a fully grown adult and being triggered by a crying baby? Grow up and put your business-class noise-canceling headphones on, lady.”
Not everyone was completely on board, however.
One commenter, while condemning the delivery, sympathized with the frustrated traveler: “Whilst this lady really needs to work on her communication … I can also see her point: you deserve to fly business, but I also feel that you need to be mindful of everyone else that is also flying business class.”
Moving forward with empathy
Despite the shock of the encounter, Freeman refuses to let one bad experience ground her family.
“We are based in Asia and travel frequently as a family, including back and forth to Australia, so this won’t stop us,” she affirmed.
However, the ordeal highlighted a pervasive issue in family travel, one that actively deters some parents from ever leaving the ground.
“It has highlighted how much anxiety parents can feel when traveling with children,” Freeman shared.
“That can begin with the looks they receive while boarding and continue if their child becomes unsettled. Sadly, several parents have messaged me saying experiences like this have stopped them from traveling altogether.”
For Freeman, opening up this dialogue has made the public ordeal worthwhile.
“The response has been much bigger than I expected, and the vast majority of the feedback has been really positive. I shared my experience because I knew I wouldn’t be the only parent who had felt this way. I wanted others to know they weren’t alone, which I feel I’ve achieved.”
As for her takeaway message to fellow travelers who find themselves sharing a cabin with a distressed infant? It comes down to basic human decency.
“Please keep in mind that the parent may be feeling far more stressed and upset than anyone listening to the baby cry,” Freeman said.
“Flying with children isn’t easy, but sometimes families simply need to travel.”
“A little patience can make an enormous difference. If you see a mother or father struggling, ask whether they need any help. Even offering a warm smile instead of a resentful look can help. Children are part of the world and have as much right to travel as anyone else.”
