Their killers made headlines, but their identities remain a mystery.
Suffolk County prosecutors are asking for the public’s help to identify two women who were separately murdered by notorious local serial killers and dumped on Long Island decades ago.
“Medford Jane Doe” was slain and dismembered in 1994 by Robert Shulman, who also murdered three sex workers and is believed to have killed more, prosecutors said in a press release.
Shulman died in prison in 2006.
His Medford victim, who was 5-foot-1 and about 135 pounds and believed to have been between 20 and 30 years old, was found stuffed in a blue Rubbermaid garbage can and left on the side of the road.
She had a distinctive tattoo with the name “Adrian” on her left shoulder, authorities said.
The second victim, “Bellport Jane Doe,” was murdered by Arthur Kinlaw, the landlord of her Michigan Avenue apartment in Bellport, in 1983 and was known as Maria or Marie, prosecutors said.
Kinlaw, 72, is serving a prison sentence of 20 years to life for two other second-degree murder convictions, including involving the death of 17-year-old Dawn Olanick.
The DA’s office released renderings of both unidentified victims and needs help ID’ing them.
“We are asking the public to take a moment to read the information available and to look at these new renderings of the victims,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement.
“We believe someone must know something,” Tierney said. “No tip is too small. Even a minor detail could help bring answers to families who have been waiting far too long.”
The public appeal is made in recognition of National Missing Persons Day on Tuesday, the DA said.
The women’s murders are among the DA’s cold-case investigations that have previously helped identify several alleged victims of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, who is charged in the deaths of seven sex workers.
