A 16-year-old boy has been charged with terrorism offences after he allegedly posted online threats and planned violent acts.

He is expected to face a children’s court on Wednesday, following a review of devices taken by investigators when his inner west Sydney home was raided late last year.

The teenager was initially charged in December, accused of possessing an unauthorised pistol and a prohibited weapon after a gel blaster and a flick knife were allegedly found in a search of the home.

Gel blasters — often designed to mimic real pistols, but firing gel balls — are classed as firearms under NSW laws, and only permitted without a licence in Queensland.

The raid came a day after the NSW joint counter-terrorism team began investigating online posts allegedly threatening extremist violence. The JCCT comprises members from NSW Police, Australian Federal Police, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and NSW Crime Commission.

The boy faced court on the weapon offences and was initially refused bail in December, before bail was granted a week later.

But after a review of his electronic devices revealed alleged material relating to extremist violence, the boy was charged again on Tuesday with collecting and making documents likely to facilitate a terrorist act.

He was also charged with two counts of possessing violent extremist material.

“It will be alleged the young person held a mixed ideology and outlined plans for acts of violence,” the AFP said in a statement.

The alleged offences carry up to 15 years’ imprisonment.

The teenager cannot be named for legal reasons.
