Peter Hartcher (“Gambling laws’ biggest winners”, August 22) has done us a favour by reporting parliament’s genuine belief that banning gambling advertising would be “a threat to the viability of free-to-air networks” and “the sporting codes, especially the AFL and the NRL”. More important, apparently, than approaching “the issue through a public health lens”. This also helps us avoid the lazy assumption that parliamentarians were “selling out for political donations”.
