Police will attempt to block a planned pro-Palestine march across the Harbour Bridge at a court hearing today, as more Labor MPs announce they will defy the premier and support the protest.

Premier Chris Minns said the protest could not go ahead on the Harbour Bridge this Sunday because it would plunge Sydney into chaos – but some of his own colleagues have spoken out against his stance.

A statement signed by 15 NSW MPs, including Labor’s Stephen Lawrence, Anthony D’Adam, Linda Voltz, Cameron Murphy and Sarah Kaine, called on the government to facilitate “a safe and orderly event” and committed to attend the march on Sunday.

The list included all Greens MPs, independents Jacqui Scruby and Alex Greenwich, and free speech advocate Rod Roberts.

NSW Police is expected to argue the protest shouldn’t go ahead because of risks to public safety and the impacts of closing a major arterial road at short notice.

“Having successfully lobbied the previous Coalition government to allow a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in support of LGBTQ equality during WorldPride, I know it can be done,” Greenwich said.

On Thursday, one of the Palestinian Action Group organisers, Josh Lees, said the march was “unstoppable” regardless of the outcome today.
