A pedestrian has died after a car crashed into a Melbourne cafe.

The 27-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was struck after the car failed to give way while she walked outside Martini and Co bar and cafe in Wantirna South, in Melbourne’s outer east, police said.

Emergency services attempted to provide first aid, but she died at the scene.

“A single vehicle was travelling along the road here, [and] has failed to give way to a pedestrian that was crossing the road,” Inspector Ben Gordon said.

“It was unclear how fast the car was going.”

A second person, who was seated outside the restaurant, was assessed by paramedics.

The 51-year-old driver of the Tesla and her passenger were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash happened at about 12.45pm on Monday.

Brody Jones, who works at the nearby Mycar Tyre and Auto, said he and his team were on lunch in the break room when a workmate ran in to tell them what had happened.

They rushed out to see a car in the restaurant and people scattering away.

“It was incredible, there were tons and tons of all of the emergency services,” Jones said.

Police are investigating after a woman was killed when a car crashed into a cafe at a shopping centre in Wantirna South.

“Everyone showed up relatively quickly and in massive numbers.

“The [shopping centre] parking team, they were on scene almost immediately,” he said, “they weren’t trained … they had to get up and close to the scene.

“They were really professional and did an excellent job assisting emergency services.”

Martini and Co is located in Westfield Knox. A post from the cafe on social media said it was closed until further notice.

“Please stay safe and we will keep you updated when we can reopen,” it said.

From pictures at the scene, it appears that the car travelled a short distance down a one-way street, mounted the kerb at a zebra crossing and hit the woman.

Major collision investigation unit detectives are investigating the crash, but police said they did not believe it was intentional.

Police said the driver was assisting with the investigation.

In an unrelated incident, a woman in her 80s was hit by a bus at a bus stop at the same shopping centre on Monday afternoon, police said.

“She’s been transported to the Alfred Hospital with serious injuries … but was stable,” Gordon said.

Police said they had not yet interviewed the bus driver.
