3 junior hockey players killed in collision south of Calgary

Three members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs Junior hockey team were killed Monday morning in a motor vehicle collision south of Calgary.

The team from Stavely, located just over an hour south of Calgary, issued a statement on social media Monday afternoon, confirming the tragic news.

The team said the three players were headed to practice when the crash happened.

Global News has confirmed the names of the three players killed in the crash. Two were from British Columbia and one was from the southern United States.

They are:

  • Caden Fine, a 17-year-old centre with the team, whose hometown was listed as Birmingham, Ala., on the team’s website
  • JJ Wright, an 18-year-old left-winger whose hometown was Kamloops, B.C., and
  • Cameron Casorso, an 18-year-old goalie who was also from Kamloops, B.C.

“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief,” reads the statement.

“These young men were more than hockey players — they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends and deeply loved members of our Mustang’s family and the communities we call home.”

“Canadians are keeping the entire Southern Alberta Mustangs community in our thoughts as they face this unimaginable grief,” he continued.

My heart breaks for the families of the three young hockey players killed in a car accident near Stavely, Alberta.

The Mustangs play in the U.S. Premier Hockey League’s Premier Division, which the league describes as being “known for developing players into college-ready athletes.”

Alberta RCMP said the crash happened around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue, at the north entrance to Stavely.

Police from the nearby community of Claresholm responded to the crash between a semi truck pulling a gravel trailer and a small passenger vehicle.

The semi was northbound on Highway 2 while the smaller vehicle the boys were in was driving east across the intersection.

RCMP said unfortunately, all three players in the passenger vehicle — two 18-year-old residents of Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old Alabama, U.S.A resident — died on scene.

The driver of the semi, a 40-year-old man from Stavely, received minor injuries and was treated on scene.

No other details from police were released Monday.
