The conviction of veteran artist and sports manager Ralph Carr for rape was one of Melbourne’s worst-kept secrets.
What was also well known to many who had crossed paths with the celebrity manager was that Carr was a small man with an enormous ego, prone to bullying and manipulative behaviour.
He loved to surround himself with the trappings of success and the famous, but was difficult to work with and chaotic.
One former staffer went so far as to describe Carr as “revolting” and “a master manipulator”.
Carr’s conviction, and the lifting of a near three-year suppression order, has opened the floodgates for many in the music and sporting worlds who have long held a dim view of the man they dubbed “The Rug”.
One woman, who worked at Ralph Carr Management in the mid-2010s while in her early 20s, described her tenure there as “an awful and confusing time”, saying she and other staff experienced “outrageous bullying” from him.
“I saw some pretty terrible things,” she told this masthead while asking to speak anonymously to protect her employment. “None of it was nice … his behaviour was revolting.”
The former employee said news that Carr, 63, had been found guilty by a jury of one count of sexual assault and two counts of rape would trigger uncomfortable and difficult memories for many women.
“The past 24 hours have been very confronting,” she said. “There is the sexual predator side, but also the toxic work culture.
“This is about a pattern of behaviour. There are multiple women with stories about things that have gone on.”
Carr continues to strenuously deny he committed any crime, and his lawyer, Dermott Dan, KC, told the County Court on Monday his client planned to appeal against the verdict.
Carr’s Instagram account is filled with photos of his famous and wealthy friends and clients.
In one image, the twice-married and twice-divorced father of three is smiling arm-in-arm with country rock star Keith Urban. In others, he poses with supermodel Miranda Kerr, shares a drink with Molly Meldrum, and another with Nine entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins.
Then there’s Carr at the Brownlow Medal night with Dustin Martin, the champion Richmond footballer who was his prized celebrity management client.
Carr had been the man behind the AFL great when Martin was part of three premiership wins with the Tigers and won the 2017 Brownlow Medal.
The pair were more than just manager and client. They were close friends and business associates, having invested together in several, multimillion-dollar commercial properties in Melbourne.
However, like Carr’s freedom that relationship is now in tatters.
In a statement, Martin said he was “shocked to learn of the outcome of the court proceedings”.
“I had no knowledge whatsoever of the conduct that led to these convictions,” the footy great said.
“My thoughts are with those affected. Effective immediately, I have ended my professional relationship with my former manager. As this is a legal matter, I will not be making any further comment.”
While Martin was Carr’s sporting ace in the pack, over the years he also represented a who’s who of stars from across the music industry – including his ex-wife, Tina Arena, former Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens, Kate Ceberano, Bonnie Anderson, Vanessa Amorosi and Rick Price. He also represented actor Madeline West, magician Cosentino, Wilkins and singer Mark Vincent who ended up fighting with Carr in the County Court over money.
Carr also worked with Priscilla Presley when she visited Australia on a speaking tour, escorting her to Flemington for the Melbourne Cup.
Famously, Carr married former Young Talent Time star Tina Arena in 2015. The couple divorced a little over four years later in what was a messy split.
He had been her manager from 1992, with Arena later describing the union in memoirs and interviews as more of a complex business dynamic than a traditional romantic connection.
They no longer speak, with Arena reporting that the marriage left her financially devastated and reduced her net worth to zero after years of work.
In the AFL, Carr made a splash running his Richmond-based agency, Ralph Carr Management Sport. He was a Carlton Football Club director, serving on the board from December 2006 until October 2008, and remains a fanatical supporter of the Blues.
His official player agent accreditation, through the AFL Players Association, was likely to be revoked following his conviction, said a fellow player agent, speaking anonymously to talk freely.
Carr enjoyed prominence when it came to hardball, headline-grabbing contract negotiations.
One industry source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the colourful Carr had brought a “Hollywood” vibe to the managerial role, befitting his background in the entertainment industry. He was also dubbed “The Rug” in some circles, because of the distinct black toupee which he still sported in court.
Carr played the “media game” with a flourish although, at times, it could seem chaotic, generating regular headlines. The industry source described him as staunch in his determination to deliver for his clients when fronting club powerbrokers, even if that ultimately left them in an uncomfortable situation with their employers.
He had stints managing former Tigers Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli and Mabior Chol earlier in their careers.
While Carr’s stubbornness often paid dividends for his clients, even as recently as last year his ability to irritate was also on show.
Carr endured the wrath of AFL headquarters when he all but broke the news that Snoop Dogg would perform at the grand final – going public with a none-too-subtle post on his LinkedIn page 12 days before the league made its announcement.
“Representing Snoop Dogg for his visit to Australia”, read the post, which was deleted shortly after. “I am looking for brand alinement (sic) and corporate opportunities …”
On former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire’s podcast, Eddie and Jimmy, McGuire said the AFL had been unimpressed with Carr, the latter having “had his nose severely pulled by the AFL saying: ‘Our announcement, dickhead, not yours’.”
McGuire added: “They weren’t happy that he was suddenly sending out to every person in the media that this was a done deal. That went down like a lead balloon.”
Carr, who is awaiting sentencing, looks to have been preparing financially for a change in his circumstances for some time.
As his rape trial unfolded, the mortgage on at least one property owned by him in Richmond was adjusted, while another property in Abbotsford to which he is linked was listed for sale with a $2.5 million price tag.
In the week before the guilty verdict was handed down, Carr also took out a fresh mortgage on a property that he had purchased in West Melbourne in 2021 for $4.1 million.
On the day of the jury verdict, Carr remained a director of 16 corporate vehicles. Under corporations law, only individuals with criminal convictions involving dishonesty are automatically disqualified from being a company director. This means Carr may not need to resign these roles, although his fast and fashionable universe is certainly changed forever.
Alongside his rock star-aligned lifestyle, Carr also professes a profound faith. His Instagram grid is interspersed with images and graphics featuring the crucifix, love hearts and words including “Jesus saves” and “Jesus equals love”.
“Each day is a gift and every breath is a reminder of God’s grace,” one post reads.
“From the time I was a child, I’ve carried deep faith in my heart – one that has guided me through every season of life and will never leave me,” says another from mid-last year.
On Monday, Wilkins, who said he hadn’t had anything to do with Carr for many years, summed up the thoughts of many in the entertainment industry: “I am obviously appalled … my thoughts are with the victim.”
