Brisbane parents can sit at home with a smile on their face, knowing their kids are growing up in the world’s most family-friendly city.

New data from Compare the Market analysed green spaces per capita and safety to identify the top cities in the world to raise a family. Brisbane, which scored 6.4 out of 10, ranked the highest of 50 cities, with Sydney coming fifth and Melbourne seventh.

Filling out the rest of the top five were London, Auckland and Helsinki.

Brisbane had 84.89 parks and playgrounds per 100,000 people, compared to Sydney’s 7.62, Melbourne’s 2.73, and London’s 30.49.

“Brisbane’s many parks and playgrounds, including the beautiful South Bank precinct, Roma Street Parklands and the Botanic Gardens (of which the city has two), are a highlight and offer families with children wonderful outdoor play time,” Compare the Market’s James McCay wrote alongside the data.

In terms of safety, Brisbane was trumped only by Helsinki in Finland, which scored 95 to Brisbane’s 90. This score was based on resident safety polls and police crime reports.

The River City, however, had far fewer activities for kids – 107 – while Sydney and Melbourne boasted 246 and 166, respectively.

Brisbane’s high ranking is the latest accolade for the Queensland capital, which has previously been lauded as one of the world’s 50 most extraordinary destinations, one of the top 20 friendliest cities, and with the world’s second-best cost of living.

To highlight our family-friendly status, here are some free activities in the Brisbane region to add to your list of weekend adventures.
