California Nanny Arrested, Facing Several Charges After Allegedly Abusing Infant in Her Care

A California-based nanny has been arrested after she allegedly abused an infant in her care.

Authorities were notified about a suspected child abuse case reported at a Los Angeles hospital on April 7. An investigation was launched into the matter and authorities learned that the infant, who was admitted to the hospital, had been physically abused.

The infant’s nanny, Carolina Cobian, was arrested on April 15 on felony child abuse charges by the Santa Monica Police Department. She was later released on bail, according to KTLA.

Few details have been revealed about the case, including how long Cobian worked for the infant’s family.

The Santa Monica Police Department announced in a news release on Thursday, May 7, that the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office filed one felony count of child endangerment against Cobian, 65, on April 24. She is now scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment regarding the charge on May 28, according to NBC 4.

It is not currently clear if Cobian entered a plea regarding her initial charges or if she has retained legal counsel.

Detectives have asked the public to help identify any additional families that Cobian may have worked for as a nanny, childcare provider or caregiver. Additionally, authorities are asking that anyone with information relevant to the investigation contact them.

Not many details of the investigation have been made public due to the nature of the case, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. It is also not currently known what condition the child is in following the abuse.

However, the Santa Monica Police Department did share tips in the news release for help parents who may suspect child abuse. “Parents and guardians should also consider unannounced check-ins, clear written expectations, and age-appropriate conversations with children about how to report if something feels wrong or unsafe,” the news release stated.

“Possible warning signs may include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, fearfulness around a caregiver, reluctance to be left alone, or explanations that do not match the circumstances,” the release continued. “Any immediate safety concern should be reported to law enforcement right away.”

The department concluded the release by saying their “priority is the safety of children and families.” The department added, “We will continue to investigate this matter carefully and thoroughly.”

The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to Us Weekly that Cobian’s is next scheduled to appear in court on May 28.
