Cameron Boyce’s mom, Libby Boyce, has reacted to Adam Sandler’s subtle nod to her late son in his new movie, Happy Gilmore 2.
“Adam and Cameron talked quite a bit in the days leading up to his death,” Libby wrote via Instagram on Monday, July 28. “Cameron was supposed to be in Hubie Halloween and they were strategizing. They had a bond I think related to being authentic, funny and just keeping it real.”
In the sequel to the 1996 comedy, Sandler as the titular character goes to a golf course to practice. When approaching the check-in booth, two people are watching an episode of Jessie, which Cameron starred in alongside Debby Ryan, Peyton List, Skai Jackson and Karan Brar. The scene features a moment from Cameron’s character in the Disney Channel series.
“Adam always finds a way to keep Cam’s memory alive which warms our heart.💜,” she concluded.
Sandler and Cameron formed a friendship when the pair worked together on Grown Ups, where the Disney star played the comedian’s son. Following the success of the 2010 comedy, Cameron reprised his role for the sequel.
In July 2019, Cameron unexpectedly died at age 20. His cause of death was epilepsy.
“It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” a spokesperson for the family said at the time. “He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated. The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”
Following Cameron’s death, Sandler paid tribute to the young star.
“Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world,” he wrote via Instagram at the time. “Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”
The following year, Sandler’s movie Hubie Halloween — which Cameron was supposed to have a role in — honored Cameron in the credits.
“In loving memory of Cameron Boyce,” the message read. “Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.”
