Child Safety Minister Amanda Camm’s absence as pressure mounts on her response to revelations children in state care were sleeping on the floor at child safety service centres was due to the Mackay MP being hospitalised.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie confirmed on Wednesday Camm was admitted to hospital on Tuesday to be treated for chronic migraines.

It comes after reports emerged on Saturday about the conditions of children in state care.

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor confirmed Camm was present at cabinet on Monday. She has still not spoken publicly on the matter.

Treasurer David Janetzki was also asked to comment on the matter on Monday, and said he would leave that for Camm.

Camm shared a video to Facebook on Wednesday morning confirming she had been in hospital and was receiving specialist treatment.

“Those close to me know I’ve lived with migraines for a long time,” she said.

“It’s a condition that isn’t often talked about, and it’s so much more than ‘just a headache’.

“I know many professionals, including colleagues, who also live with chronic migraines while continuing to perform at the highest level. I hope we can keep having more open conversations about this often invisible condition.”

Shadow treasurer Shannon Fentiman and opposition child safety spokeswoman Corrine McMillan called for Camm to be stood down on Saturday over the conditions for children in state care.

Fentiman said Camm had had too many failures, noting the Unify IT rollout put children at risk, as well as the decision to bring forward the deadline for the commission of inquiry into child safety.

“This child safety minister’s time is up,” she said.

“This premier promised to hold his ministers to account. He promised there would be KPIs in place, and those ministers that weren’t performing would not stay in their job.”
