Denmark’s Christian Eriksen ‘doing well’ after mid-match collapse

Danish footballer Christian Eriksen, 34, is “doing well” and “in good spirits” as he recovers at home following a mid-match collapse on Sunday.

The Wolfsburg midfielder was playing an international friendly for Denmark against Ukraine in Odense, Denmark, when he dropped to the ground clutching his chest with both hands.

The match was abandoned following the incident, although Eriksen remained conscious.

The former Tottenham and Manchester United player had a pacemaker fitted in 2021, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match.

Eriksen wrote on Instagram that he wanted to reassure everyone that “this was a different situation from what happened in 2021” and that he was “already feeling good.”

In a post on Facebook on Sunday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wrote she was sending her “warmest thoughts to Christian Eriksen and to all those around him who are affected.”

Following Sunday’s incident, Denmark team physician Morten Boesen said: “As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.”

Boesen also said in the statement that the federation is “taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them.”
