Jeff Apter of Keiraville reflects on the bare facts of dress codes (C8): “During my lively youth, a group of us were on a coastal holiday, and were advised a collared shirt was required to attend the local club. No problem, my friend figured, and that night he duly strolled through the door wearing nothing but a collared shirt and a broad smile. He didn’t last long inside, but he did turn a few heads.”
“In the early ’80s, a trip to Karumba revealed the local pub had two bars: The Animal Bar and The Suave Bar,” recalls Les Montgomery of Whian Whian. “On asking, we were told the Suave Bar insisted that footwear be worn, but that thongs would suffice. There were no other dress rules for either bar.”
Paul Hunt of Engadine has a bit of Chatswood Charles (C8) folklore: “I, too, used to frequent that popular place, which was famous for having one of the longest bars in Australia as well as booking some top entertainers. It was late on a Saturday night as the band took up their places on stage in front of a capacity audience. The excitement was palpable, the enthusiasm spectacular. There was no formal introduction, just a few notes that immediately conveyed who they were. The song? Spicks and Specs. The group? The Bee Gees! It was their last concert before they left for London to try their luck. Some town. Some luck”.
“I have herd everything now,” says Allan Gibson of Cherrybrook. “Several all-beef patties on the hoof entering the drive thru at Macca’s in none other than the Brisbane suburb of South Ripley!” Believe it, or not.
Granny reckons James White (C8) took it easy on her in pointing out that she’d mislabelled his Victorian place of residence, Beveridge, as Beverage. To make it up to him, he said, “I’ll just have a coffee.”
“I am actively learning about AI, but as a senior citizen, I think it has its challenges,” thinks Sue Shute of Lake Macquarie. “I missed a call the other day, and found the voicemail had been converted to text, informing me that Prince Andrew was trying to contact me. Can this be true? I definitely hope not!”
George Manojlovic of Mangerton rails against delays: “Joe Moore (C8), passengers on the Sydney rail network may well be detrained, retrained and mistrained, but in Athens, they’re Constrained.”
