Almost every New Yorker is feeling the financial strain these days — it’s like you can’t step outside without being slapped with a $50 tax nobody voted for.
Where does it all go? Mostly, we’re just existing — inflated Uber rides, $20 salad bowls, $9 iced lattes on our way to work. Some of us have that money to spend — many more of us do not.
In that latter camp of cash-strapped Gothamites, a growing number are embracing the concept of “no spend days” — or “$0 itineraries”. They’re challenging themselves to explore and enjoy the five boroughs without opening their wallets — beyond, perhaps, a tap or two at the turnstile.
They’re brewing coffee at home, wandering museums that never charge admission, picnicking in underappreciated city parks — all the while discovering that some of New York’s best experiences have been free all along.
Ally Gibson loves her life in the Big Apple — but she also loves sticking to a budget. She’s been planning her own “no spend days” for years — long before social media gave the idea a name.
“The real New York, the one eight million people actually live in every day, runs almost entirely on free or low-cost experiences,” the Yorkville denizen, 36, told The Post. “The parks, the architecture, the energy —all of it is accessible to everyone.”
“I likely saved thousands of dollars a year over my thirteen years here,” she said.
“My perfect ‘no spend day’ in New York City starts with coffee or matcha made at home, then a morning walk through Central Park — ideally before the tourists arrive,” she said.
From there, she heads to the New York Public Library’s iconic Rose Main Reading Room — and the building’s little-known free museum, where she loves saying hello to the original Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals — before wandering her favorite cutting-edge Chelsea galleries, dodging crowds on the High Line, and hopping aboard the Staten Island Ferry for skyline views and brisk harbor breezes, gratis.
Her favorite summer freebie, Gibson said, is Shakespeare in the Park — running through Aug. 23 at the newly renovated Delacorte Theater in Central Park with a production of “The Winter’s Tale.”
While tickets are free, they’re in high demand — but theater lovers can score them through same-day lines, a digital TodayTix lottery or standby seating. Gibson said it’s totally worth being on the ball and patient to snag a seat.
“There’s nothing like watching the sun set behind the stage, with Belvedere Castle and the city skyline in the background, while world-class theater unfolds in front of you,” she said. A passionate solo traveler, she’s been all over — but insists she’s never found free theater of this calibre anywhere else.
If Gibson doesn’t manage to nab a ticket, she’ll switch gears and happily go for Bryant Park’s no-cost Monday movie nights, free concerts scattered across the Big Apple’s parks — or simply indulge in a bit of “people-watching” from her favorite neighborhood bench, along with a snack from home.
Rebeka Getty is another New Yorker determined not to let the cost of living keep them down — and she’s encouraging others to follow her example. Funder of the popular website and social media account NYC For Free, she loves all things beauty — and said that cost-conscious New Yorkers can build entire weekends around fashion pop-ups, product launches and beauty events.
“Many people don’t know that you can go to the L’Oreal Test Salon in Midtown, become a salon test model for the day and get complimentary services and hair care goodie bags,” Getty, 31, told The Post.
She also recommends keeping tabs on MAC Cosmetics locations — where New Yorkers can score free makeovers, skincare samples and salon treatments, simply by planning ahead.
Getty said that anyone willing to do a little digital sleuthing — whether beauty is their bag or not — can stay busy almost every weekend
“If you’re trying to find fun free things to do in New York City, it all comes down to research,” she told The Post.
For East Village resident Brianne Elliott, 25, living cheaply isn’t just trendy — it’s survival. She works three jobs to afford her life here — but the pay isn’t great.
“I made $30,000 after taxes in 2025,” she told The Post. “My first and biggest expense is my rent.”
That’s made her an expert at stretching every dollar. She cooks meals at home, packs food for picnics with friends, joins free run clubs she finds online and spends afternoons taking advantage of museum free-admission days.
Some of her favorite no-cost cultural gems are the American Folk Art Museum in Lincoln Square, MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, the Museum at FIT, the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden on Staten Island.
But one of Elliott’s favorite zero-dollar hobbies is something uniquely New York.
“I got so much of my furniture because neighbors were getting rid of it,” she said. “I saw a dresser sitting outside my apartment and took it in, and now I have a dresser.”
Known locally as “stooping,” and as made popular by Instagram accounts like @stoopingnyc and @stoopinginbrooklyn, the unofficial treasure hunt has become a pastime for bargain hunters hoping one person’s trash really is another person’s coffee table.
“New York can be expensive, but I also think it can be so cheap when you intensely budget,” Elliott said, adding that you can fill up your days here with “more free things than you might think of, if you just really think outside of the norm.”
Fellow New Yorker Erik Chan told The Post that he lives by the same code.
“The best-kept secret in New York is that the city was practically designed to be enjoyed for free, you just have to know where to look,” he said.
His ideal itinerary: Homemade coffee, a free SummerStage concert in Central Park, no-charge kayaking at Pier 26 in Tribeca and walking the Brooklyn Bridge at golden hour.
“I started doing this to fight the ‘everything costs money’ mindset, and it’s easily saved me hundreds a month,” Chan explained.
“To anyone who says you can’t enjoy New York for free — you’re paying for a version of the city the locals already skip.”
Families can also keep costs at zero this summer.
Parents looking to entertain the kids without emptying their savings can drop into NYC Parks’ free Kids in Motion program, which fills playgrounds across the five boroughs with games, sports and other organized activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sept. 21 — no sign-up necessary.
Moms and dads in need of a diversion can also pencil in Bryant Park’s free Tuesday “StoryTime” sessions through Aug. 25 — where performers like Cali Co Cat entertain kids ages 2 to 8 with interactive stories and live “Meowsic” between 10:30 and 11:30 in the morning.
And every Wednesday through Oct. 28, Washington Square Park transforms into a free outdoor art studio as resident teacher Miss Debbie hosts “Art in the Park,” a two-hour afternoon of drawing, painting, crafts and hands-on fun for kids from 3 to 5 p.m.
Overall, for New Yorkers convinced every outing has to come with a receipt, these budget-conscious locals insist the city’s best attractions were never behind a paywall.
Sometimes all it takes is a homemade coffee, comfortable sneakers — and knowing where to look.
