Exclusive | Wild video shows NYC garbage truck literally on fire in middle of snow-packed Queens street

It’s a real dumpster fire.

Wild video shows the back of a city Sanitation Department truck ablaze in the middle of a snow-packed Queens street Monday morning.

The footage obtained by The Post captured bright-orange flames bursting from one the receptacles on the back of the DSNY truck, halfway down a residential Kew Gardens street — with heaps of dirty snow still piled up around parked cars.

The fire – likely sparked by a lithium-ion battery improperly tossed in the trash, according to the DSNY – erupted around 9:40 a.m. on Kew Gardens Road near 82nd Avenue, the FDNY said.

The FDNY extinguished the blaze around 11 a.m. according to the department.

The official cause of the blaze remained under investigation. But a DSNY spokesperson said it appears to have erupted after one of the highly flammable batteries – used to power e-bikes, scooters and mopeds – was disposed of incorrectly.

“Improperly disposed batteries regularly cause fires in our collection trucks, putting our workers, equipment and facilities at risk,” the department said in a statement. “We have seen a big increase in this issue over the last several years.”

The department encouraged New Yorkers to bring unneeded lithium ion batteries to SAFE Disposal Events and Special Waste Drop-Off Sites open three days a week in each borough.
