A girl has died and six others hospitalised, including an infant, after four cars crashed in West Melbourne just before the afternoon peak hour on Wednesday.
Four other people travelling in the same car were injured.
A man in the car,30, is in a critical condition in hospital, while a woman, also 30, a four-year-old boy and an 11-month old boy have also been hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities closed Dynon Road in both directions about 5pm while responding to the crash, with the road still closed and diversions along Footscray Road, Wurundjeri Way and Dudley Street for drivers travelling between the city and Melbourne’s west.
The drivers were the only occupants of the other three vehicles involved in the crash. Two of them, both men, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a woman in the fourth vehicle was treated for her injuries at the scene.
Police continue to investigate the collision, and anyone who witnessed it or has CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
It marked the second death on Melbourne roads in less than 24 hours. Just after 2am on Wednesday, a 26-year-old Craigieburn man was discovered dead on the Hume Freeway in Wallan. Police are seeking witnesses and information relating to that crash also.
Victoria’s road toll is now at 116 for 2026, down 19 per cent on the previous year and below the five-year average.
