Major change to TSA protocol is forcing some frustrated passengers to check carry-on bags

Skipping the stress of baggage claim at the airport by using all carry-ons may no longer be possible.

Though the roll-out of the Transportation Security Administration’s new security scanners is intended to offer flyers more thorough screening capabilities and an easier time passing through security checkpoints, it may pose a snag when it comes to taking carry-ons on the plane — as they may not fit through the new devices. 

The 3-D, X-ray computerized tomography (CT) scanners may be elite machines, but Daniel Velez, a TSA spokesperson, shared that their under-an-inch smaller opening does not let larger items pass through as easily as the former scanners did — though he said that the design is “necessary” so that the new tech can accommodate the advanced imaging technology and guarantee optimal performance.

“TSA officers are available to assist travelers with larger items or special needs to help ensure a smooth screening process,” Velez said.

Though the carry-on dimensions that airlines typically allow for — 22″ x 14″ x 9″ — will still fit in the new scanners, per a report by Simple Flying, passengers who hope to squeeze through with larger bags or even expandable options (being that these may change shape when fully packed) may find themselves out of luck.

To ensure an easy trip — and to avoid the hassle of needing to return to the airline ticket counter to check their bag — Velez proposed a few tips for travelers, such as cross-checking the dimensions of one’s carry-on bag with airline size guidelines, using the bins (the new CT machines do not allow bags to go directly onto the belt), and packing away laptops, since the new tech allows for them to stay in-bag.

While some travelers may feel intimidated or frustrated by the new tech, they do pose advantages — providing TSA agents with a 3-D view inside luggage, which will likely reduce manual inspections. Travel-size liquids will also no longer need to be removed.

The announcement comes in the wake of some other recent TSA changes, such as the agency’s new guidelines on packing squishies (the viral toys that are getting confiscated at checkpoints due to the gel liquid inside) and a potential allowance for full waterbottles, though this would likely only apply to PreCheck travelers under its Gateside by TSA program at 13 airports.

This program is expected to expand once the TSA evaluates operations after the initial rollout is complete. For now, flyers must still follow the 3-1-1 rule, where carry-on liquids must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less.
