A man has died in his car following a pursuit across the Queensland and NSW border.
The man, believed to be a 25-year-old from Queensland, was allegedly armed with a firearm when he drove across the border at the Gold Coast about 1am on Sunday.
He was initially reported to police at Robina about 11.45pm, and was later found by officers on the side of West Burleigh Road. He evaded an attempt by officers to detain him, and crossed the border on the Gold Coast Highway.
Queensland Police reported the incident to NSW Police, who located the man on Sexton Hill Drive at Banora Point.
The man failed to stop when directed to do so and a police pursuit was initiated, continuing through multiple nearby suburbs before road spikes were successfully deployed twice in South Murwillumbah.
He continued to drive for some time before stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road in Kunghur – about a half hour southwest of Murwillumbah – about 2am.
The man was found unconscious inside his vehicle by officers, who immediately performed CPR, but he died at the site of the incident.
A firearm was seized from the vehicle.
The man is yet to be formally identified, and a critical incident team will investigate the matter.
