Mass stabbing rocks California city as five people rushed to hospital

A booze-fueled argument exploded into a bloody stabbing rampage in Old Sacramento early Saturday, sending five men to the hospital before the suspects allegedly jumped into a white Jeep Cherokee and took off, authorities said.

The violence erupted just after 3 a.m. near Front Street and K Street, where Sacramento police responding to reports of an assault with a weapon found three men suffering from stab wounds.

As detectives unraveled the chaos, they discovered two more men had shown up at a local hospital with stab wounds tied to the same attack, pushing the total number of victims to five.

All five men were listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon, police said.

Saturday morning’s violence echoes a string of high-profile incidents that plagued Old Sacramento in 2021, including a massive brawl involving about 50 juveniles and a homicide later that summer.

The incidents frustrated Old Sacramento business owners, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting. 

A survey conducted around that time also found residents, business owners and property owners wanted more done to curb street partying, public intoxication, erratic driving and cruising.

Investigators arrested 18-year-old Sacramento resident Ezekiel Griffis after identifying him as a person of interest in the case. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on assault charges.

Police initially detained three people of interest in the aftermath of the violence, but later released the other two.

The investigation remains ongoing.
