Mystery as $28K in Legos stolen from train turn up in California desert

Authorities are trying to piece together how more than $28,000 of Legos stolen from a train turned up in an abandoned van in the California desert.

A deputy from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station made the discovery while doing a check of the van at National Trails Highway and Pioneer Road Newberry Springs on Monday, police said.

Inside, police found 123 sets of McLaren F1 Legos — valued at $230 per box — suspected to have been stolen during a recent train burglary.

Agents from the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railways arrived at the scene and confirmed the theft.

The total estimated haul of the toys was $28,290.

Several images from the scene showed the boxes stuffed inside the van, which bore a Sparkling ICE beverage drink logo on the outside.

No arrests were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

BNSF is one of the largest railroad freight carriers in the US, operating a transportation network “of 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces,” according to its website.

Last week, suspects fired on BNSF railway police in shoot out on a San Bernardino County train in what authorities described as a robbery.
