Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema is ceasing operations less than three years after launching in New Farm Park.
The closure was announced on social media and in an email to Dendy subscribers.
“Our riverside location has been part of many movie memories over the years, and we’d like to say a massive thank you for your support, visits, iconic photos, local wildlife, and, of course, for being part of our community along the way,” the email said.
Dendy Cinemas chief executive Sharon Strickland said the venue was a “cherished part of Brisbane’s cultural landscape”, and she was grateful to audiences, partners and the team for their support.
“We’re proud of the role this cinema location has played in Brisbane’s arts and entertainment story,” Strickland said.
Brisbane Powerhouse chief executive Louise Bezzina said it was “rare to have a space that so naturally encourages people to come together in such a relaxed and joyful way”.
Bezzina confirmed that the partnership was coming to a close, and said they were looking at future opportunities for the precinct.
Dendy Powerhouse opened in November 2023 as Brisbane’s only permanent outdoor cinema that was not a drive-in.
Films were projected onto shipping containers next to the Brisbane Powerhouse, in the same location as the former Moonlight Cinema. Deckchair seating and wireless headphones were provided.
The cinema served pizzas that were popular with patrons – as well as the local possums.
The closure comes in a year of strong results at the Australian box office, powered by hits including Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Wuthering Heights, and Michael.
“We’ve seen a run of record-breaking openings, the strongest Easter period in six years, and now continued growth across both box office and admissions year-on-year,” Guy Burbidge, the managing director of Val Morgan Cinema, said earlier this month.
Dendy Powerhouse will sign off this Sunday, May 31, with a free screening of the Talking Heads concert movie Stop Making Sense.
