Rosendorff Diamonds’ new director is facing legal action over a substantial tax bill to the tune of millions of dollars, according to a Supreme Court writ filed this week.
Rosendorff is one of Western Australia’s premier luxury businesses and has been a big part of the state’s retail landscape for over 60 years.
Founder Craig Rosendorff launched the business in 1963, growing it into an iconic brand famous for bespoke designs. The company’s glamorous showroom on Hay Street Mall in Perth’s CBD was famous for its exclusive pieces and high-profile events.
The company’s website says it will continue operating in a “more efficient operating model, allowing us to focus on quality, service, and value” as its workshop remains operational.
But earlier this month a liquidator was appointed to wind up Rosendorff’s former parent company Clyde and Associates, owned by Macabi Diamonds owner Yoni Levy.
Levy bought Rosendorff Jewellers from receivers in 2019 the last time the business was suffering, announcing at the time that he was “thrilled to announce a new chapter for Rosendorff”.
“The team welcomes you to a new era for the business, and we look forward continuing the brand’s incredible legacy for generations to come,” he said.
However, this week legal action was filed against Levy by the Australian Taxation Office to recover alleged unpaid tax debts and penalties totalling almost $1.5 million.
WAtoday understands Rosendorff Jewellers was sold to a third party shortly before it entered administration earlier this month allowing it to remain operational.
According to the writ of summons issued by the Supreme Court of WA, Levy served as a director for Clyde and Associates Pty Ltd, which failed to remit taxes withheld during various periods between 2022 and April this year.
These failures resulted in significant director penalties for which the tax office is now seeking judicial recourse.
The summons formally mandated that Levy respond within 10 days to avoid a default judgment. Failure to enter an appearance or file a defence could lead to the court ruling in Levy’s absence.
