Renewed plans to demolish existing buildings at a prestigious inner-city school and construct a state-of-the-art learning centre have been revealed.
Built on a slope, the structure at Somerville House in South Brisbane will be nine storeys at one end and four at the other.
Plans show large “multipurpose learning areas”, meeting rooms, change rooms, offices, a kitchen and canteen, and breakout spaces.
It will replace the existing B Block, C Block and D Block West buildings at the north-west end of the oval. The building will connect internally to the existing D Block.
Similar plans were lodged in 2021, but construction did not go ahead and the development approval lapsed in early 2026.
The school has been contacted for comment.
“This development will replace outdated facilities and provide contemporary teaching, learning and supporting administrative spaces,” the application lodged with Brisbane City Council said.
Somerville House said in the document it was not planning to increase student intake. Construction would take place in a single stage.
The school has two heritage-protected structures on site: the Somerville House and South Brisbane Municipal Chambers. It says neither will be negatively impacted by the development.
Established in 1899, Somerville House is located on Vulture Street and educates about 1400 girls.
