Revealed: The world’s most expensive tourist visas for EU citizens

European passports are among the strongest in the world, offering visa-free access to more than 150 destinations.

But not every country opens its doors to EU citizens without a fee – and some are a lot pricier than others.

We’ve rounded up the visa (and electronic travel authorisation) fees for more than 40 countries around the globe to see where tourist entry for EU citizens costs the most, and the results might surprise you.

Ghana has the most expensive entry fees, with an e-visa priced at $260 (€227.48). However, depending on length of stay, a visit to Bhutan could cost you more as while the entry fee is $40 (€35), you will also be charged a Sustainable Development Fee of $100 (€87.60) per person per night.

Japan has shot up the ranks to become one of the most expensive tourist visas following the news that the fee would be increasing five-fold from ¥3,000 (€16.16) to ¥15,000 (€81.28) earlier this month.

Most expensive tourist visas for EU citizens

All tourist visa fees were cited from the respective country’s immigration websites. The fee selected is the cheapest option available to visitors, but these may not be a direct comparison.

Where a range is given, the tourist visa fees differ depending on which EU country your passport is from.

Euronews Travel has excluded countries with “do not travel” advisories in place, as well as countries where no information was available online.

Be sure to check the official immigration website before travel as fees may change.

The EU’s own travel authorisation

The EU is set to roll out its own system, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), although the launch date has reportedly been delayed from Q4 2026 until some point early next year.

Travellers from visa-exempt countries including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, North Macedonia, Albania and more will be required to apply for the ETIAS before entering 30 European countries.

The ETIAS, which is priced at €20, is valid for three years, or until your passport expires.

With the ETIAS, travellers will be able to stay in these European countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
