Revealed: The world’s most underrated natural wonders

The world’s most breathtaking natural wonders aren’t always the ones topping bucket lists.

In the Instagram age, the appetite for visiting some of the world’s most beautiful places is endlessly growing, as concerns over overtourism show no sign of slowing down. Travellers are increasingly looking for places less explored – and, crucially, less busy and built up.

New research has revealed the most underrated natural tourist destinations, which can offer some of the most rewarding experiences on Earth.

Icelandic outdoor clothing and apparel brand Icewear analysed some 54,000 Google reviews from 75 global sights to rank the world’s most underrated natural wonders, and came up with a list of the top 30.

These reviews were analysed for positive words, including “relaxing”, “amazing”, and “beautiful”, in order to determine which locations offer the most underrated experiences.

Although there are five European destinations in the top 30, only one – Staffa National Nature Reserve in Scotland – cracked the top five.

Iceland has the most underrated destinations in Europe

The Nordic nation of Iceland is the only European nation to feature more than once in the ranking. In fact, it features twice, with the Stuðlagil Canyon and Vatnajökull National Park among the most underrated.

Located in East Iceland, Stuðlagil Canyon ranks 24th globally, with 35.2% positive reviews. Hidden for centuries, the dramatic gorge only emerged in 2009 after the water level of the Jökulsá á Dal river was lowered during a hydroelectric project. Today, visitors flock to admire its striking basalt columns and, during the right season, the vivid turquoise glacial river that flows through the canyon.

Meanwhile, Vatnajökull National Park ranks 29th, with 28.2% positive reviews. Established in 2008 around Europe’s largest glacier, the vast UNESCO World Heritage Site covers around 13 per cent of Iceland and encompasses glacier lagoons, black sand plains and the country’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur, making it one of the island’s most diverse and spectacular landscapes.

The most underrated destinations for natural beauty worldwide

Hoh Rain Forest, Washington, United States

Situated in the state of Washington, the Hoh Rain Forest tops the ranking as the most underrated natural wonder, with an impressive 69.6% of visitor reviews using positive words like “beautiful” and “amazing”.

In the heart of the Olympic National Park in Washington, the forest is one of five US-based natural wonders to feature in the top 30 list.

It’s known for its dense green canopy of trees, including the Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Big Leaf Maple, thanks to the yearly average rainfall of a significant 3.55 metres.

There are also countless hiking opportunities and all-season campsites, which win visitors over.

Crater Lake, Oregon, United States

In the neighbouring state of Oregon is Crater Lake, which has 68.5% of positive reviews.

Dating back 7,700 years, the stunning spot formed following a large volcanic eruption. Today, the lake, the deepest in the United States, boasts some of the most beautiful blue water in the world and is remarkably pure.

In the summer, visitors can hike, camp and fish, and, in the winter, snowshoe walking here is enormously popular.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre, Alaska, United States

Against the backdrop of Alaska’s state capital, Juneau, is the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre.

The gateway to the Meddenhall Glacier, it has 67.2% positive reviews from visitors.

The natural wonder is a thirteen-mile-long (nearly 21 km) river of ice, connected to the 1,500 square mile (3885 km sq) Juneau Ice Field.

Visitors can take in floating blue icebergs in the Mendenhall Lake, which contrast with towering mountain peaks. There are numerous trails, too, which feature waterfalls and salmon streams. Wildlife sightings here are extremely impressive, too, with black bears, porcupines, and bald eagles as potential spots.

Staffa National Nature Reserve – Fingal’s Cave, Scotland

Off Scotland’s west coast, the uninhabited island of Staffa is home to one of Europe’s most remarkable natural wonders: Fingal’s Cave. The site ranks fourth globally and is the highest-rated in Europe, with 62.8% of visitor reviews containing the positive words.

Part of the Inner Hebrides, Staffa is famed for its striking hexagonal basalt columns and the cathedral-like cave that inspired Felix Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture.

Visitors can reach the island by boat and explore the dramatic coastline, with many also hoping to spot puffins, black guillemots, and other seabirds that nest here during the summer months.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Wyoming, United States

In Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park, Grand Prismatic Spring ranks fifth among the world’s most underrated natural wonders, with 61.9% of visitor reviews using positive language in their reviews.

The largest hot spring in the United States – and the third largest in the world – is famous for its vivid rainbow colours, created by heat-loving bacteria that thrive in the mineral-rich water. Measuring around 110 metres across, and 50 metres deep, it has to be seen to be believed.

Boardwalks and nearby hiking trails offer spectacular views of the spring’s swirling blues, greens, yellows and oranges – and it remains one of Yellowstone’s most photographed sights.

The most overrated natural wonders

At the other end of the scale, the study looked at the most overrated natural wonders. These were ranked based on the lowest number of reviews featuring certain positive words like “beautiful”, “amazing”, and “breathtaking”.

Königsstuhl Kreidefelsen and Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes, both in Germany, were found to be the most overrated tourist attractions, with only 1.4% of reviews describing both with words like “beautiful”, “breathtaking”, or “amazing”.

In third place was the Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park in Brazil, which, despite being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025, only attracted 2.8% of positive comments.

Next up was the Rio Tinto River in Spain. Despite being somewhat of a natural icon due to its striking red waters, it achieved just 3.8% of good reviews.

Rounding out the top five is Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses in Brazil.

Best known for its white sand dunes and seasonal rainwater lagoons, it got only 7.2% positive feedback, according to the ranking.
